Winners Take All - Watch this video.
/I really enjoyed watching this Google talk given by Anand Giridharadas based on his book Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World.
In the video, (and presumably in his book, I haven’t read it but will be) he makes the argument that the philanthropic approaches taken by the Elites, people as well as corporations like Google, in order to create change in the world are geared to continue to enrich themselves. It is similar to Douglas Rushkoff’s recent argument against Universal Basic Income as a redistribution scheme to ensure more money continues to be funneled to the top.
Anand’s talk reaches peak entertainment when he suggests, within the offices of Google itself, that perhaps Google is too big and should be broken up for the benefit of society.
It’s an hour long, but video isn’t necessary - there are no slides or anything - so listen on your way to work or whatevs.
