My Ideal Day

For some, an ideal day might entail sipping margaritas on the beach until sunset or going to see their favorite band play.   My ideal day is much simpler and yet might encompass those and many others.

For me, an ideal day is one in which I do one thing.  As in, a day where I can answer the question “what did you do today?” with a single item.    For example?

“What did you do today?”

“I went to the bank.”

or

“What did you do today?”

“I went for a hike.”

or

“What did you do today?”

“I wrote a new song.”

Any answer can be valid, but it’s got to be distillable down to a single item.

This speaks to a couple things about my personality:

  1. Most details don’t matter.  Of course people do more than a single thing in a day.  They wake up, take a shower, have breakfast, go to work, run errands, blah blah.  These things usually aren’t interesting.  If someone asks you what you did today and you answer with that level of detail, you need help.  Hit the highlights.  Don’t bury your lede.  Etc.
  2. There’s a certain speed I like to live at.  At little focused.  A little chill.  A speed where doing a bunch of projects and errands in a single day feels like too much.  A speed that being a grown-up and a parent, I’m often not afforded.

So if your perfect day is kicking it on a beach or going to a concert or  having a workout or grilling with friends… it’s probably my perfect day too now and again.
